While Dirty Dancing received a follow-up film in 2004, the upcoming, in-the-works sequel is just a little bit more special than Havana Nights.
The news of the sequel was met with some hesitation from die-hard fans due to the passing of Patrick Swayze in 2009, but Jennifer Grey will be returning as Baby for the film.
Director, Eleanor Bergstein, wrote the 1987 romantic drama Dirty Dancing and based the plot on her own childhood experiences. Bergstein sadly passed a few years later in 1993 from complications to AIDS. The film was released and earned $214.6 million in the box office. The film follows: "Baby (Jennifer Grey) is one listless summer away from the Peace Corps. Hoping to enjoy her youth while it lasts, she's disappointed when her summer plans deposit her at a sleepy resort in the Catskills with her parents. Her luck turns around, however, when the resort's dance instructor, Johnny (Patrick Swayze), enlists Baby as his new partner, and the two fall in love. Baby's father forbids her from seeing Johnny, but she's determined to help him perform the last big dance of the summer."
The film ultimately received a 2004 prequel titled Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights -- which starred Romola Garai and Diego Luna; The film follows "American high-school student Katey (Romola Garai) moves with her wealthy parents (Sela Ward, John Slattery) to Cuba in 1958. She encounters Javier (Diego Luna), a poor local who works as a waiter, and soon a relationship blossoms between them. At a nightclub, Javier teaches Katey the nuances of Cuban dance, which becomes her passion. As the young lovers grow closer, Fidel Castro suddenly rises to power. When her parents decide to flee to the United States, Katey must make a difficult choice." The film received $27.685 million in the box office.
Now, in 2022, The film is getting a proper sequel with Grey returning as Francis "Baby" Houseman. The film will be directed by Jonathan Levine, and is expected to be released in 2024. Grey also told Good Morning America this May that filming could happen later this year. Grey will not only reprise her role as Baby but will also serve as the executive producer. The sequel will feature the setting of the Catskills resort again.
